
Mr. Sharanksy is one of the leading world proponents for democracy and Human Rights. As a famous Jewish Russian “refusnik” he lent a face and a voice to the suffering of humanity under a totalitarian regime and he proved that struggling for one’s cause is the responsibility of humans and the reward for humanity.
Natan Sharansky was born in the Ukraine in 1948, became a mathematician, then a spokesman for the Soviet Jewry who wanted to emigrate to Israel after the Six Day War. For his demands to let the Jews immigrate to Israel he was incarcerated in Siberia for 9 years. In 1995 he founded Israel B’Aliyah to represent the million Russian Jews who immigrated to Israel. Subsequently, he held numerous ministerial positions and that of deputy Prime Minister. Author of numerous books, and recipient of the Congressional Gold medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, he resides in Israel.
